Hurricane Harvey downgraded to tropical storm as devastation continues in Texas (U.S., 20 articles) [UPDATE]
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-Hurricane Harvey pounded Texas on Saturday with torrential rain and high winds, threatening catastrophic flooding, though the storm was gradually losing strength after hitting the coast late Friday. Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Gulf Coast of Texas Friday, making landfall as a Category 4 storm around 10 p.m. local time, and meteorologists are noting a pattern in which the system appears to remain in one area over multiple days. About three hours after making landfall, Harvey was downgraded to a Category 3 storm after winds decreased to 125 mph from maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. The storm dumping torrential rains throughout the region that the National Hurricane Center says will continue for a few more days and bring as much as 40 inches of rain in some areas. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said upwards of 20 inches of rain had hit the Corpus Christi area, which was in the path of the storm, and an additional 20 to 30 inches were expected elsewhere. The storm officially became a category 2 hurricane as of 1 a.m. on Friday with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, according to the National Weather Service, and was expected to continue to strengthen over the next 24 hours.

Trump pardons former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio (U.S., 15 articles)
Criticism of President Donald Trump announced on Friday he was Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an anti-immigration hardliner found guilty last month for flouting a 2011 court order that barred officers from detaining Latino motorists solely on the suspicion they were illegal immigrants. Trump on Friday pardoned Arpaio, the former Arizona sheriff whose aggressive efforts to hunt down and detain unauthorized immigrants made him a national symbol of the divisive politics of immigration and earned him a criminal contempt conviction. Trump's pardon Friday night of Arpaio of Arizona leaves me disappointed and exhausted by yet another action the occupant of the White House has taken to insult and degrade the entire Hispanic community.
North Korea likely tested a weapon that could start a Second Korean War (World, 13 articles) [UPDATE]
North Korea fired several short-range missiles into the sea off its east coast early on Saturday, South Korea and the U.S. military said, as the two allies conducted annual joint military drills that the North denounces as preparation for war. The test came just days after senior U.S. officials praised North Korea and Kim Jong Un for showing restraint in not firing any missiles since late July. The U.S. Pacific Command has revised its assessment of the latest North Korean missile launches, saying the first and third projectiles did not fail in flight.
